Job Description


Naval Nuclear Laboratory has internship opportunities for college students to spend the summer of 2025 getting great work experience, in great locations, supporting the world's greatest Navy.



NNL Summer Technical Internships in the Nuclear Engineering community offer you an immersive professional experience in your field of study. You will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge of physics and nuclear engineering with support and mentorship from real world experts in one or more of the following areas:

Research - investigate new or improved core materials
Design - perform analysis and recommend design of reactor plant systems, I&C, and shielding
Analysis - model development and nuclear analysis using state-of-the-art solvers to inform design and operation of the reactor plant or spent fuel handling
Fleet support - product manufacturing, fleet data tracking, and nuclear analysis support of the fleet



At NNL you are a part of a team working on deliverables that have a direct impact on the Navy's nuclear fleet.



Program highlights include:

Final presentation to management, peers, and other NNL employees
Meet directly with NNL General Manager and Executive Leadership

The NNL Internship is an approximate 10-12 week program starting in May/June 2025.



An internship position may result in a return internship or full-time employment offer upon successful completion of the program.



Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill


Candidates for Nuclear Engineering internship positions must be:

Pursuing a BS, MS or PhD degree in engineering or related science from an accredited college or university
Must have completed at least first full year of college by May 2025
Enrolled/continuing in a degree program throughout this internship



Students must attach most recent unofficial college transcripts and resume to the employment application.



Preferred Skills


Working towards a Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Materials Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering degree are strongly preferred
Cumulative minimum GPA 3.0/4.0
Experience performing independent research
Ability to learn new concepts quickly
Proven strength in verbal and written communication
Experience working on nuclear engineering related projects or codes (e.g. radiation transport, thermal hydraulic, or other nuclear computational methods)
Familiarity with programming and scripting
Prior related internship, co-op or work experience (paid or volunteer)
Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD) or Naval Nuclear Program experience

Pay Range


$23-$41 per hour

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation.
