Responsibilities Monitor, diagnose, and repair heavy equipment including, but not limited to, skid steers, toolcats, wheel loaders, utility vehicles, tractors, and forklifts. Convert equipment to accommodate seasonal changes including polar tracs, snowplows and sanders, water tanks, and leaf vacuums. Modify, fabricate, install, and repair specialized equipment including snowplows and edges, hydraulic hoses and fittings, electrical systems and wiring, water pumps and plumbing, and dump boxes. Conduct repairs using welding equipment. Inspect, repair, and maintain small gas engines and power equipment including weed whips, power blowers, hedge trimmers, tillers, sod cutters, power seeders, aerators, and spreaders, zero-turn mowers, snowblowers, snowplows, salt and sanding equipment, tree spade, woodchipper, chainsaws, electric carts, air compressors, and skid steer attachments. Perform snow removal or sanding in the event of high demand or emergency. Use computers to communicate with personnel and document equipment issues. Manage inventory of replacement parts and materials. Assist and advise supervisor on equipment replacement, procurement, and disposal. Train employees on general equipment maintenance, safe operation, and technical skills. Serve as lead mechanic by managing daily workflow, prioritizing repair needs, and mentoring other mechanics. Supervise, lead, and direct seasonal student worker. Other duties as assigned by supervisor. high. The position is covered by the Teamsters Union - Union/Fair share deductions may be made. Work Environment Work is performed both inside shop spaces and outdoors. This position will be exposed to extreme weather conditions year-round and extended hours during times when repair demands are Qualifications Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent and combination of vocational education and/or experience in repairing and maintaining heavy equipment and power equipment totaling six (6) years. Valid Commercial Driver's License - class A with air brake endorsement and no chargeable driving offenses. Minimum two (2) years of experience in each of the following: welding, acetylene torch use, hydraulic systems, commercial driving with a trailer. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Ability to twist, bend, stoop, climb ladders, lift up to 50 pounds regularly, reach at and above shoulder height, squat, kneel, and lie on shop floor or ground. Knowledge of a wide variety of equipment types and brands. Ability to use a computer and portable tablet device. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with fellow employees, management, customers, vendors, and the general public in a courteous, cooperative, and professional manner. Maintain a positive attitude, demeanor, and public image when performing services for customers and the general public at the University. Familiarity with local & regional equipment vendors. Experience working in a decentralized work environment. Ability to work in a team environment and lead junior staff and part-time student employees. Strong communication and customer service skills.
