- May specialize in plastering, tile setting, tuck pointing, Limestone, brick & block laying, or in the pouring and finishing of concrete.
- Sets, installs, and slushes in door frames in existing masonry walls.
- Erects various types of scaffolding.
- Works from aerial lifts of various types to complete tasks.General Responsibilities
- Studies blueprints, drawings, plans, or sketches to construct, maintain, and repair a variety of masonry structures, such as walls, steps, walkways, concrete pads, floors, curbs, and exterior and interior surfaces and coatings.
- Shoots grade and lays out site for pouring of footings and foundations. Constructs forms, supports, and bracing systems.
- Mixes cement, sand, aggregate, additives, and water to produce concrete, grout, mortar, or slurry using hoe, trowel, shovel, or power mixing equipment.
- Spreads, levels, and smoothes concrete using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, hand or power screed, and float.
- Molds expansion joints and edges using edging tools, jointers, and straight edge.
- Mixes and/or applies surface coatings such as sealer, curing and hardening agents, masonry stains, and colorings.
- Lays and binds building materials such as brick, ceramic tile, concrete block, cinder block, glass block, and terra cotta block with mortar and other substances.
- Breaks or cuts bricks, blocks, and rough and irregular stone to size using trowel edge, hammer, chisel, or power saw.
- Calculates angles and courses and determines vertical and horizontal alignment of courses. Determines and implements the best layout to achieve a desired pattern.
- Repairs and finishes mortar joints between stones, bricks, or blocks of masonry wall. Removes mortar to specified depths using raker, hammer, chisel, power saw, and compressed air.
- May use mortar bag to force mortar into joints.
- Cleans and prepares surfaces. Mixes plaster, stucco, and other compounds to desired consistency and applies to walls, ceilings, or partitions of buildings using trowels, brushes, or spray guns. Caulks windows, doors, or cracks in wall with caulking gun.
- Performs other general building maintenance as needed.
- Participates in the training of apprentices and, or other workers as needed.
