Under the general direction of the Chief Operating Officer, the Head of Retail shapes the visitor retail experience by creating a unique and engaging environment which complements the Museum's mission and exhibition schedule. The Head of Retail creates a dynamic, profitable retail operation that expands community engagement while developing and maintaining a strong, unique identity for the HoMA Shop and managing its overall operation and performance.
The ideal candidate will bring a creative, entrepreneurial spirit to their day-today activities, including management and supervision of the HoMA shop, product and vendor selection, new merchandise development, administrative reporting, and inventory control.The Honolulu Museum of Art:

  • Bachelor's degree or combination of relevant education and work experience.
  • Five years of retail management and buying experience, including the direction and supervision of store staff, hiring, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Five years of experience in point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory management, and data analysis.
  • Ability to plan merchandise and shop events around the Museum calendar and community trends.
  • Experience in visual merchandising, optimizing sales, and highlighting product opportunities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both within the team and cross departmentally to achieve goals and relay important information.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and maintain a calm demeanor in challenging situations.
  • Honesty, integrity, enthusiasm, perspective, and a strong work ethic supported by commitment and follow-through.
  • Ability to work within and support a diverse community of visitors, artists, and employees.
  • Ability to build, lead, and develop a driven, diverse team of employees.Desired Qualifications:
    • Five years of experience in art, craft, gallery, or museum retail.
    • Working knowledge of websites and online sales platforms.
    • Experience in a museum environment or nonprofit organization.
    • Understanding of Honolulu Museum of Art's established identity and dedication to advancing it.
    • Develops and implements the Museum Shop's merchandise plan to support HoMA's mission and budgeted shop profitability.
    • Devises and implements store displays to present products creatively and maximize sales.
    • Develops a collection of merchandise that creatively complements HoMA's art collection and temporary exhibitions.
    • Prepares and tracks the annual budget and monitors the profitability of the shop.
    • Works with HoMA's Communication department on marketing strategy.
    • Works with museum's Learning and Engagement, Events, and Curatorial staff to ensure awareness of appropriate products that reflect the institution's programming.
    • Works with appropriate departments to plan and manage store specific member and public events that reinforce the museum's mission while attracting a new and loyal consumer base.
    • Collaborates with a range of artists to create proprietary items for the store.
    • Tracks all invoices and oversees financial reporting to the Finance department. Receives merchandise into POS system as needed.
    • Works with Communications department to add incoming products to the store website,
    • Conducts annual inventory and works with Finance to ensure inventory records are maintained and completed in a timely manner.
    • Other duties as assigned.
    • Manages a shop team with oversight in recruitment, professional development, and training.       The Honolulu Museum of Art is committed to practicing salary transparency. The minimum salary for this position is $65,000 per annum and the maximum salary is $80,000 per annum. Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting pay, including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity. This opportunity includes a generous benefits package, including but not limited to:

        Works in an office environment. General office hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 8 hours per day, with flexible scheduling as needed. Ability to operate general office equipment including computer, copier, printers, fax machine, etc. Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, up to 25 lbs. of general office material or equipment. Ability to work some evening and weekend hours.
