Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to one calendar year for part time employees.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates activities, programs, and services designed to increase college-going rates for GEAR UP cohort students. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Delivering educational experiences that foster individuals' awareness of college opportunities and encourage their entry to post-secondary education.
    • Completing college admission applications and FAFSA with cohort students.
    • Promoting clarity for cohort students in making their academic plans and setting their educational goals.
    • Developing learning skills and organization study techniques to help improve the academic performance of cohort students.
    • Aiding cohort students in navigating their orientation, advising, and registration process to college.
    • Collaborates with high school faculty, college counselors, and other personnel in coaching and advising cohort students to bolster their individual belief and confidence in academic learning and to clarify their knowledge of the auwai or pathway leading to college success. This includes, but is not limited to:
      • One on one and group coaching and advising to cohort students.
      • Working with school personnel to provide cohort students and their families with additional support in making academic and career-related decisions, maintaining on-track graduation status, and accessing available resources.
      • Partnering with school personnel to create personal leadership opportunities and experiences to become effective team members.
      • Coaching and advising other GEAR Up staff in their collaboration efforts with high school personnel and others to serve the cohort students in meeting GEAR Up project goals and objectives.
      • Facilitates planning and scheduling of college awareness experiences including college campus tours to promote college-going and entry for cohort students and their parents. This includes, but is not limited to:
        • Teaming with other GEAR UP Project staff to establish and promote relationships with other college-going programs.
        • Providing academic and interpersonal support for cohort students and their families.
        • Uses tracking mechanisms to gather, tally, and summarize data on planned programs and other educational experiences to evaluate their attainment of Project goals.
        • Prepares reports, including on-line submissions involving cohort student engagement and success efforts.
        • Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications:
        • Bachelor's degree
        • The equivalent of 6 months of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for providing educational services or equivalent education, training and/or work experience.
        • Functional knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in minority student success, student academic support, or student retention & success as demonstrated by knowledge, understanding, and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
        • Demonstrated ability to operate a computer and word processing software.
        • Ability to work effectively with multicultural populations, including individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
        • Ability to work outside normally scheduled business hours including evenings and/or weekends. To Apply:
