PRODUCTION TECH LEAD - Lamar Colorado

Purpose & Scope: A successful Production Tech Lead will utilize their understanding of complex animal science principles to oversee, manage, and support the daily work objectives of the breeding herd and gilt grow out facilities team members to facilitate breeding by artificial insemination, administering medications, assisting with birthing problems, feeding cleaning and keeping detailed health records of animals. They will be directly involved in the planning and implementation of our company s policies and procedures as they pertain to maximizing animal production productivity. Principle Responsibilities: Adhere to and monitor team members during production activities to ensure adherence safety, Animal Welfare and Bio-Security proceduresMotivate team members to increase production and maintain high production standardsServe as liaison between team members and management Evaluate and implement continuous improvement of swine production processAbility to perform necropsy and collection of tissue sample including PUC samplingExamine animals to detect symptoms of illness or injuryTreat minor injuries and ailmentsCommunicate with appropriate management and/or veterinarians to obtain treatment for animals with serious illnesses or injuriesStock supplies of feed and medicinesAbility to understand and implement advanced sow/gilt care and handling (feeding/watering/moving/ventilation)Observe animals in heat to detect approach of estrus and exercise animals to induce or hasten estrus, if necessaryUnderstanding and ability to conduct advanced breeding functions (artificial insemination, heat check, day-one pig care)Select animals to be bred, and semen specimens to be used, according to knowledge of animals, genealogies, traits, and desired offspring characteristicsRecord animal characteristics such as weights, growth patterns, and dietsBrand, tattoo, or tag animals for animal identificationPlace vaccines in drinking water, inject vaccines, or dust air with vaccine powder to protect animals from diseasesExercise animals to keep them in healthy conditionAdjust controls to maintain specific building temperatures required for animals' health and safetyMaintain logs of semen specimens used and animals bredInject prepared animal semen into female animals for breeding purposes, by inserting nozzle of syringe into vagina and depressing syringe plungerPrepare containers of semen for freezing and storage or shipment, placing them in dry ice or liquid nitrogenPackage and label semen to be used for artificial insemination, recording information such as the date, source, quality, and concentrationExperience with or ability to learn farm technology (hand held devices/wand sows and other equipment, as necessary)Attend safety meetings Cleaning and disinfection of facilities, including removal of mortality and wasteCheck feed system and fill linesProduction/facility housekeeping duties Any other tasks assigned by Assistant or ManagerRequired Qualifications:4-year college degree in related field or equivalent experience in similar production environmentStrong communication and listening skillsExperience with or ability to learn farm technology (computers, hand held devices/wand sows and other equipment, as necessary)Demonstrated ability to solve problems and make decisions independentlyAbility to effectively lead a teamBe a team oriented, self-motivated, and positive individual with strong work ethicAbility to efficiently multi-task in a fast-paced environmentFamiliarity with Bio-Security and swine productionAbility to work weekend, as scheduledAbility to continually bend, push, grasp, and pull up to 60 lbs Continual walking and/or standing, up to 95% of the dayReliable method of transportation requiredAbility to work early 1st shift hours or late 2nd shift hours Preferred Qualifications:Bilingual English and SpanishThe applicant who fills this position will be eligible for the followingcompensation and benefits:Benefits: Vision, Medical, and Dental coverage begin after 60 days of employment;Paid Time Off: sick leave, vacation, and 6 company observed holidays;401(k):company match begins after the first year of service and follows the company vesting schedule.Better Futures Program Online Classes or select 2 Year Community College tuition paid for you or your dependents!Supervisor Development Program:Opportunity to grow your career through leadership training.The company is dedicated to ensuring a safe and secure environment for our team members and visitors.
