This is an exceptional opportunity to lead the newly accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program. About North East Medical Services:North East Medical Services (NEMS) is the largest Federally Qualified Health Center in the United States serving the low-income Asian population, with over 67,000 patients and close to 375,000 annual visits. NEMS offers comprehensive, language concordant health care services in Chinese, Vietnamese, Tagalog, and Spanish across 14 clinics/sites from San Francisco to San Jose. For over 50 years, NEMS has taken pride in ensuring high quality care and outcomes for their patients. Most recently, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) recognized NEMS with the Health Center Quality Leader Gold Award in 2022, reaffirming its place among the top 10% of all health centers in the nation.NEMS has 133 health care providers who offer a range of medical specialties, including Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Family Practice, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Dentistry, Optometry, Ophthalmology, Cardiology, and Radiology. The programs address preventative health care education and practices as they relate to the cultural needs of the community.To learn more about NEMS, visit: .To learn more about NEMS IM Residency Program, visit: .About the Position:Reporting to the Vice President and Chief Health Officer, the Residency Program Director will oversee the coordination and administration of the NEMS Internal Medicine Residency Program. This includes planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling program activities. The Internal Medicine Residency Program is newly accredited by ACGME and has an emphasis on primary care. The first residency class at NEMS is set to begin in July 2023. We are looking for an experienced Program Director with a background in teaching and ambulatory care leadership. The successful candidate will be an innovative, collaborative, and highly motivated leader with strong mentoring skills. This is an ideal role for a physician leader with a passion for teaching and serving the underserved. NEMS' partnering hospital, AHMC Seton Medical Center, has a rich history rooted in community-based care serving San Francisco and northern San Mateo County since 1893. Seton offers a 357-bed facility and a comprehensive range of medical specialties on both an inpatient and outpatient basis, as well as emergency services. The hospital is also recognized for its stroke treatment and cardiovascular excellence, including STEMI certification.Responsibilities:


  • Plan the delivery of the overall residency program and its activities in accordance with the mission and goals of NEMS.
  • Design an educational experience that enables resident physicians to obtain the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to practice independently.
  • Ensure that the program complies with all relevant legislation and professional standards along with NEMS's policies and procedures.
  • Identify and evaluate the risks associated with program activities and take appropriate measures to control the risk.
  • Work closely with the Administration team to obtain appropriate funding for the residency program.
  • Ensure the annual review and approval of a statement of institutional commitment to GME that specifies, at a minimum, a commitment to providing necessary educational, financial, and human resources.
  • Provide guidance and support to residency program to ensure compliance with ACGME Program Requirements, thereby maintaining program accreditation.
  • Direct supervision of a workgroup involving responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and personnel. Responsible for carrying out supervisory/managerial responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing and hiring of employees; planning, assigning, scheduling, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

    Qualifications & Experience:

    • Minimum 3 years participation as an active faculty member in an ACGME-accredited internal medicine residency program.
    • A minimum of 3 years of graduate medical education administrative experience prior to appointment and specialty expertise.
    • Current certification in the specialty by the American Board of Internal Medicine or specialty qualifications that are acceptable to the review committee.
    • Current medical licensure and appropriate medical staff appointment.

        • Identify and evaluate the risks associated with program activities and take appropriate measures to control the risk.
        • Participate in the selection of teaching and mentor staff.
        • Monitor and evaluate the program for improvement.
        • Work closely with the Administration team to obtain appropriate funding for the residency program.
        • Ensure the annual review and approval of a statement of institutional commitment to GME that specifies, at a minimum, a commitment to providing necessary educational, financial, and human resources.
        • Contribute, as requested, to corporate strategic plan development for medical education.
        • Oversee the management and job performance evaluation of all personnel in the Department of Graduate Medical Education's table of organization.
        • Provide guidance and support to residency and fellowship programs and their directors to ensure substantial compliance with ACGME Program Requirements, thereby maintaining program accreditation.
        • Manage relationships and activities with national education societies, associations, and organizations.
        • Assure that all programs have current, required program letters of agreement with other institutions' programs that provide training to Leading Healthcare Company residents/fellows.
        • Direct supervision of a work-group involving responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and personnel. Responsible for carrying out supervisory/managerial responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing and hiring of employees; planning, assigning, scheduling, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
        • Perform other job duties as required by manager/supervisor.

          Qualifications

          • Minimum 5 years' participation as an active faculty member in an ACGME-accredited internal medicine residency program; and
          • A minimum of 3 years of graduate medical education administrative experience prior to appointment and specialty expertise.
          • Current certification in the specialty by the American Board of Internal Medicine or specialty qualifications that are acceptable to the review committee; and
          • Current medical licensure and appropriate medical staff appointment.
          • Possession of an MD, DO, PhD, or Master's degree(s) in Education, Healthcare Administration, Public Health, Business, or another related field will be considered.

            Language

            • Bilingual preferred in Chinese (Cantonese and/or Mandarin).
