Position Description


The Social Work Program in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas Tech University invites applications for two full-time, 9-month, Assistant Professors of Practice to teach in the Online MSW degree program option beginning September 1, 2024. Faculty in non-tenure acquiring appointments are expected to teach four courses each long semester, as assigned and according to program needs, and engage in significant service activities with the university, community, and/or profession. These positions do not require residency in Lubbock, candidates anywhere in the United States will be considered. Applicants must have a strong identification with the mission and core values of Social Work and experience teaching with web-based modalities. Top candidates will also have experience developing online curriculum consistent with CSWE's educational standards.

About the College

Founded in 1925 as one of the university's four original colleges, the College of Arts and Sciences is comprised of 15 departments offering a wide variety of courses and programs in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, and natural sciences. In 2022, the college enrolled over 10,000 students, representing over a quarter of the Texas Tech University student population. About the Department/School/Area

The Social Work Program is housed in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work. Accreditation with CSWE (Council on Social Work Education) was initially granted in 1979 for the BA in social work degree. The Master of Social Work (MSW) program, offering an advanced generalist approach with a focus on health and well-being, was established in 2015 and is fully accredited through 2031. Today, ten full-time faculty lines and two full-time staff positions are dedicated to the preparation of BASW and MSW level students.



Major/Essential Functions

At Texas Tech University, the Professor of Practice title is used to recruit individuals with exceptional backgrounds and achievements in academic, business, government, or other professional practice. Primary responsibilities normally will be to teach in an area of expertise, mentor students in professional and career preparation, and liaise with professional contacts and entities on behalf of the department or program.

Faculty Qualifications

In line with TTU's strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

Specific required qualifications include:

  • MSW or equivalent degree in social work from a CSWE accredited institution.
  • 4+ years of post-MSW social work practice experience.
  • Active license to practice social work in any U.S. state.
  • 2+ years' experience teaching or developing social work curriculum with web-based modalities.
  • Evidence of ongoing commitment to serving diverse student populations.



    Preferred Qualifications

    In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:
  • Credentials and training to provide specific types of social work interventions.
  • 5+ years' experience teaching social work as an instructor of record for college or university level coursework.
  • 10+ years of combined social work practice experience at any level.
  • A Doctorate in Social Work or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated record of contributions to the profession's knowledge base, through peer-reviewed publications and/or presentations at the local, state, regional, or national level.
