Position Description


Performs instructional and educational work while serving as a teacher in a classroom/lab. Organizes and develops course work, coordinates classes for students, observes and assesses the needs of the students. Maintains communication both formally and informally with students and other educators. May supervise clerical, professional and/or technical employees and lab students working for college credit.

About the Department and/or College

The Department of Human Development and Family Studies in the College of Human Sciences operates a Child Development Research Center (CDRC) which provides educational/developmental programs for approximately 80 families with children from birth through five years of age. The CDRC serves as a site for instructional experiences for university students who work with children in laboratory, student teaching, and practicum courses. In addition, the Center provides interdisciplinary research opportunities for faculty and graduate students.The CDRC is accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Program Accreditation. The Academy is a division of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the nation's largest organization of early childhood educators. The CDRC is also licensed by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) and serves as a Rising Star Vendor for Child Care Services.



Major/Essential Functions

  • Demonstrate the mental, emotional, and physical ability to work with young children and parents. Knowledge, skills, and abilities to work with children with disabilities and from culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to plan and facilitate developmentally appropriate experiences and environments utilizing knowledge of Developmentally Appropriate Practice, NAEYC Accreditation Standards, and DFPS Minimum Standards.
  • Maintains daily and routine communication both formally and informally with parents and students.
  • Shares responsibility with co-teacher to supervise and evaluate 10-15 student assistant staff and assign tasks. Plan and conduct monthly student staff meetings.
  • Provide student staff with information about individual children, child development principles, and guidance issues.
  • Assist with planning and conducting parent meetings/conferences, and special center functions. Conduct one formally scheduled teacher/parent conference per semester.
  • Ability to model for and communicate with college students how to interact with, discipline, assess and plan appropriate experiences and environments for young children while also focusing on the children in the classroom.
  • Read, evaluate and provide feedback on college students' assignments.
  • Provide for the health, safety, and supervision of children at all times.
  • Maintain professional ethics and positive working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, students, and parents.
  • Ability to work as a member of a professional team.
  • Attend and participate in weekly team planning meetings and center staff meetings.
  • Maintain CPR and First Aid certification for infants, children, and adults.
  • Adhere to the Texas Family Code 231.001 as it pertains to the abuse and neglect of young children.
  • Observe and record the behavior of children in the classroom to determine needs and interests as a basis for planning and intervention.
  • Record one formal assessment per child per semester.
  • Participate in professional development by attending conferences and professional meetings and by reading professional literature.
  • Provide in-service training for local early childhood programs.



    Required Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree required; Two years teaching experience required.



    Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in early childhood education, child development, elementary education, or early childhood special education.
    • Bachelor's degree outside of those listed above must show the candidate has earned at least 36 college credits in early childhood education, child development, elementary education, and/or early childhood special education.
    • Texas Teacher certification including birth - 8 years.
    • Experience with young children 0-5 (preferably with age group posted).
    • Theoretical and working knowledge of Developmentally Appropriate Practice and the principals of Active Learning.
    • Experience working in a NAEYC-accredited program.
    • Ability to work with others closely as a team.
    • Experience supervising other adults.
