SummaryThe Director of Academic Affairs will play a pivotal leadership role in managing and overseeing all aspects of our academic mission, including but not limited to the department's residency and fellowship programs, faculty recruitment and onboarding, faculty development and promotions, marketing and communications, and coordination with human resources within the Department of Surgery. Reporting to the Associate Chair for Administration, this position will work closely with the Chair, Executive Vice Chairs, and other leaders daily. The successful candidate will partner with the Executive Vice Chair of Academic Affairs to ensure the smooth functioning of academic operations and will collaborate closely with department leadership, faculty, residents, fellows, and administrative teams to ensure the highest standards of education, professional development, and operational efficiency. Responsibilities1. Residency and Fellowship Program Oversight: - Manage and provide leadership for all residency and fellowship programs within the Department of Surgery in partnership with the Associate Chair of Education and residency/fellowship coordinators who will report to this position
- Ensure compliance with accreditation standards, including ACGME, and other regulatory bodies
- Collaborate with program directors to develop, evaluate, and refine curricula and clinical training opportunities
- Coordinate and lead program evaluations and improvement initiatives to enhance educational outcomes 2. Faculty Recruitment and Onboarding:
- Oversee faculty recruitment efforts, ensuring a streamlined process for attracting top-tier candidates
- Develop and maintain relationships with external and internal stakeholders to identify and recruit faculty
- Lead the faculty onboarding process with division coordinators, ensuring new hires are appropriately integrated into the department
- Support department leadership in maintaining a diverse and high-performing faculty workforce
3. Faculty Development and Promotions: - Lead faculty development initiatives, including mentorship programs, continuing education, and leadership training
- Advise faculty members on career development, promotions, and academic advancement
- Facilitate the promotion and tenure review process, ensuring consistency and adherence to departmental and institutional guidelines
- Work with department leadership to ensure alignment between faculty development initiatives and department goals 4. Marketing and Communications:
- Oversee the work of an experienced marketing and communications team
- Partner with the Chair and ACA to prioritize projects
- Proofread copy before publication
- Advocate for resources on behalf of the marketing and communications team5. Collaboration with Human Resources:
- Act as the primary liaison between the Department of Surgery and Human Resources to address staffing needs and HR-related issues
- Ensure proper documentation for new faculty hires, promotions, and personnel changes
- Work closely with HR on compensation reviews, benefits, and policies impacting faculty and academic staff
- Ensure that departmental practices comply with institutional HR policies and procedures 6. Administrative Leadership:
- Provide strategic direction and leadership for the academic affairs team, ensuring alignment with departmental objectives
- Develop and manage budgets for academic affairs initiatives
- Collaborate with leadership to set departmental goals and track progress toward achieving them
