JOB TITLE: EMT Basic / Firefighter LOCATION: Corning, NY (Big Flats Base)FLSA: Non-Exempt Starting pay is $17.99/hr. and up, for FT hires, based on years of experience! POSITION SUMMARY:The AMR Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B) responds to emergency and non-emergency calls and delivers high quality patient care and customer service within the prescribed scope of practice, established protocols and company policies. The AMR EMT-B / Firefighter under general supervision, performs fire prevention, fire suppression, hazardous material incident response, and emergency rescue and medical assistance duties to protect life and property. EMT ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintains thorough familiarity with treatment protocols, response requirements and quality assurance procedures in system in which assignedMaintains awareness of any and all changes in the system components and company policyContinuously maintains the level and type of certification(s) consistent with performing tasks in the system to which assignedComplies with all state and company requirements for operation of motor vehiclesOperates a company vehicle in accordance with company policy and safe practicesDevelops ability to quickly and safely locate addresses through knowledge of number systems and street layoutsEnsures that unit remains in a state of readiness in terms of mechanical reliability, medical supply and equipment, cleanliness and appearance standardsReports immediately to the Lead Paramedic any discrepancies in vehicle or equipment standards that could compromise the unit's ability to complete a callCompletes all appropriate documentation as outlined in company policyReports all problems and unusual occurrences immediately to the Lead Paramedic, Supervisor or OperationsMaintains a professional appearance by adhering to hygiene and uniform standardsAttends all mandatory in-servicesMaintains a cooperative working relationship with allied health and public safety personnelMaintains complete and accurate documentation or patient assessment and treatment as applicable to system or operations which assignedMaintains complete and accurate documentation of patient statistical and billing information and services renderedAdheres to medical treatment protocolUses/operates appropriate communications equipment, medical equipment, cleaning equipment, office equipment and toolsAppropriately uses medical equipment such as gurney, airway equipment/airway bag, IV, splints, bandages, and medications in rendering proper emergency medical treatment to patientsReads road maps, drives vehicles, and accurately discerns street signs and address numbersReads medication/prescription labels and directions for usage in quick, accurate, and expedient mannerCommunicates verbally with patients and significant others in various environments to interview patient, family members, and bystandersAbility to discern deviations/changes in eye/skin coloration due to patient's condition and to the treatment givenConverses with dispatchers and EMS providers via phone or ratio as to the status of the patientAdheres to all company policies and proceduresAdheres to and complies with all information systems security and policiesNon-Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Performs other duties as assignedFIREFIGHTER ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Customer ServiceConducts fire safety, home safety, fire extinguisher and pre-fire planning inspectionsProvides information to the public, installs smoke detectors, conducts station tours, visits schools, and participates in public education standbysPosition requires cooperative/supportive interaction with co-workers, supervisors, doctors, and other healthcare workersInteracts with representatives of other City departments, other fire departments and local, state, and federal agenciesFire SuppressionPerforms fire suppression duties by responding to emergency fire alarmsAssists in the suppression of structural, residential, commercial, industrial, chemical, petroleum, vehicle, aircraft, and Wildland fires, applying the appropriate extinguishing agents to the source of the fireOperates various pieces of fire equipment and gear for fire suppression and control; drives and operates fire apparatus; search and rescue; ventilation and salvage operationsProvides written reports detailing specific firefighting and rescue actions taken on sceneResponds and operates fire apparatus from mini-rescue units to Class A fire apparatus and an Arial platform truckWorks closely with ARFF unit at Elmira-Corning Regional Airport (Department 1)MaintenanceConducts daily and weekly vehicle and equipment inspections as assignedEnsures all vehicle and equipment discrepancies are documented and reported to the on-duty Fire CaptainTrainingParticipates in all required training sessions, including, but not limited to, live fire drills, performance evaluation drills, ongoing skills maintenance, practice and training, annual OSHA drills, EMS major skills and any other mandatory Company trainingMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education/Licensing/Certification:
High School diploma or GED. Emergency Medical Technician training and certification as required by State of County to which assignedNYS Firefighter 1 (or equivalent) - Qualified Interior FirefighterNYS EVOC with experience responding with Class A Fire ApparatusNYS Pump Operations with experience, preferredValid State Driver's LicenseBasic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS/CPR) certification for all EMT levelsKnowledge and Skills: Some past work experience, preferably in healthcare desiredMust be able to drive an ambulance and have a driving record in compliance with AMR policy regarding insurability.Effective oral and interpersonal communication skillsPhysical Requirements |
