The Opportunity:Avantor is seeking a strategic Senior Director, Head of Applications R&D to join our organization, responsible for the research and development of new applications in-house and/or at customer sites, product improvements to address customer problems, exploration of new product-related technologies, and development of technical application notes. The scope of this role is biopharma production including chemicals, single-use systems, and consumables.This position manages a team of application scientists and engineers. He/she builds capability for innovative use of relevant technologies, processes, and methods. This role supports technical interactions with customers to qualify new products and gain acceptance of innovative technologies. He/she directly manages Application personnel, the L2 program and/or coordinates with the SVP R&D to ensure compliance with global R&D standards and processes and that adequate capabilities and skills are in place. The Sr. director of R&D drives innovative approaches and cross-functional engagement to successful project completion as per plan. This position is a key contributor to global business strategies and the strategic planning process.What we're looking for: - Education: PhD in biochemistry, chemistry chemical engineering, bioengineering, microbiology or cell biology, or molecular biology
- Experience: 12+ years of experience in bioprocess research-oriented activities with the ability to conduct and manage projects.
- 8+ years of leadership experience.
- Comprehensive direct experience in bioprocess development and biological manufacturing
- Proven experience in leading teams and collaborating with stakeholders and suppliers to improve biological manufacturing processes and technology transfer.
- Setting and achieving challenging goals for self and others
- Ability to manage technical projects consistent with business strategy.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Good interpersonal and presentation skills.
- Ability to frame up, prioritize and deploy resources to execute projects according to value, cost, and risk with limited supervision.

- Identify and develop product applications demonstrating unique value propositions to customers.
- Build a collaborative working model and collaborate closely with customers to help solve problems leading to the qualification of products into the final process.
- Manages L2 (horizon two product line extension) project teams to drive the generation of customer-relevant ideas leading to new product development.
- Directs and manages R&D programs to develop key tools and technologies leading to novel products and innovative solutions to relevant and complex problems.
- Maintains an overview of end-use applications for Avantor's products, market trends for assigned focus areas, innovative technology developments and current/emerging customer needs.
- Build strong relationships with key opinion leaders and key decision-makers at all levels.
- Participates in industry associations and conferences to surface and prioritize current trends and opportunities within assigned focus areas in the biopharmaceutical space.
- Supports the development of business cases including customer needs analysis, opportunity scoping, needs-based market segmentation, competitive landscape, value chain economics, value proposition, creation, messaging, and pricing strategies, as well as project financials.
