About the MuseumThe Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park (AMM) is a major community asset serving Anne Arundel County and beyond. AMM educates youth and adults about the Annapolis area's rich maritime heritage and the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay through programs, exhibits, and community events. We accomplish this mission through an engaging suite of hands-on programming and by bringing visitors to our two campuses on Back Creek and aboard the Museum's historic skipjack, Wilma Lee.A volunteer board of 17 distinguished community members and a professional staff oversee the operations and long-range planning for this tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We are proud to share that our thriving cohort of nearly 250 volunteers are involved in all aspects of the Museum's functions.The Education Center at the Museum's Park campus offers four core education programs, as well as field trips, family programs, afterschool programs, summer camp, and more. The Education Center serves more than 12,000 students annually educating them on the history, ecology, and cultural traditions of the Chesapeake Bay.AMM hosts numerous events and programs throughout the year (e.g., Boatyard Beach Bash, Oyster Roast & Sock Burning, Tides & Tunes Summer Concerts and September Sunsets Concert Series, Winter Lecture Series) and serves as a gathering place for both civic and community functions.Overview and Job SummaryThe Annapolis Maritime Museum (AMM) is seeking an experienced Finance Director to lead its financial operations. As a key member of the senior leadership team, the Finance Director will oversee all financial aspects of the museum, ensuring its long-term financial stability and integrity. This role includes responsibility for Human Resources functions, overseeing the administration and management of a $2.7 million annual operating budget in addition to a Capital Campaign budget. The Finance Director will work closely with the President/CEO, Board of Directors, and department heads to provide financial guidance, develop budgets, monitor financial performance, and ensure compliance with all regulatory and funding requirements.Key Responsibilities:

  • 70% Financial Management:
    • Develop and manage the museum's annual operating budget of $2.7 million, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
    • Oversee day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger maintenance.
    • Prepare timely and accurate financial reports for the CEO and Board of Treasurer.
    • Manage cash flow and forecasting to ensure the financial health of the museum.
    • Oversee Capital Projects budgets.
    • Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaising with external auditors and the Finance Committee.
    • Work closely with the Vice President of Development to ensure accurate reconciliation of gifts and grants, ensuring compliance with all financial regulations and reporting requirements, including tax filings and grant reporting.
    • Develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and controls to enhance the museum's financial systems.
    • 25% Human Resources:
      • Oversee all Human Resources functions, including recruitment, employee relations, performance management, and benefits administration for a team of 20 full-time and part-time employees.
      • Develop and implement HR policies and procedures that promote a positive and inclusive work environment.
      • Manage the museum's payroll system, ensuring accuracy and compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
      • Oversee employee benefits programs, including health insurance, retirement plans, and other benefits.
      • Provide support and guidance to managers and staff on HR-related issues and best practices.
      • Ensure compliance with labor laws and regulations, including recordkeeping, reporting, and policy adherence.
      • 5% Strategic Planning:
        • Partner with the President/CEO and Finance Committee to develop and implement the museum's strategic financial plan.
        • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support decision-making and long-term planning.
        • Identify opportunities for cost savings, revenue enhancement, and operational efficiencies.
        • Assist in the development and implementation of fundraising strategies, including grant administration and donor relations.
        • Serve as a key member of the museum's senior leadership team, contributing to organizational strategy and decision-making.
        • Collaborate with department heads to ensure alignment of financial and operational goals.
