Gallery exhibitions are often coupled with public lectures and workshops to foster connections to the regional communities and to encourage new and diverse audiences to become engaged with Herron.Job SummaryThe Gallery Director will be charged with bringing established and emerging contemporary artists, designers, and scholars to the galleries and promoting the programs to the university and community. The Gallery Director works with the Exhibitions and Speakers Committee, the Dean, the Director of Development, External Affairs staff, and external volunteers to support gallery exhibitions, lectures, educational components, and community engagement activities. They will also foster opportunities to work with other units on campus and to invite participation from the community and members of the John Herron Society and the Friends of Herron.Department-Specific Responsibilities - Coordinates and administers all aspects of the Herron School of Art and Design's galleries.
- Develops and implements policies related to programming including planning exhibition schedules, solicitation of guest curators and traveling exhibitions.
- Maintains and inventories Herron's permanent gallery collection.
- Supervises Gallery Assistant Manager and student workers.
- Works closely with faculty to develop programming and exhibitions that support academic curricula, advances scholarship, and expands research opportunities.
- Oversees gallery and exhibition budgets and all financial considerations, especially the development of funding sources including grant writing and philanthropic engagement (local, national, and international sources) in coordination with the dean, development director, and fiscal officer.
- Promotes programs, exhibitions, and events in coordination with the school's marketing team.General Responsibilities
- Performs a variety of responsibilities in support of day-to-day museum operations, including curation, collections maintenance, museum tours, facility operations and exhibition planning, coordination of staff and volunteer activities, marketing and communications, and event planning.
- Ensures proper maintenance of artwork and museum artifacts and performs inventory for collections.
- Monitors the condition of facilities, ensuring safety and security for guests, and initiates work orders for supplies, maintenance, repairs, and other issues as needed.
- Plans and develops procedures for tours, events, collaborative projects, and other museum programs; works with vendors and community partners.
- Liaises with community partners to organize projects, exhibitions, promotional material, and events.
- Frequently interfaces with other staff, faculty, students, and the general public. Resolves issues and relays procedures/policies as needed.
- May provide guidance to other Museum Services staff and volunteers.QualificationsCombinations of related education and experience may be considered.
