Chemours is seeking an Environmental Intern to join our Chemours Discovery Hub Facilities team! This position will report directly to the Environmental Manager. As an intern, the Environmental Specialist will be introduced to environmental regulatory compliance activities for the Chemours Discovery Hub in the fields of: hazardous materials management, air emissions control, stormwater best management practices, wastewater discharge compliance, non-hazardous waste management, hazardous waste management, and chemical inventory compliance. The goal of this internship is to gain useful knowledge in the field of environmental regulatory compliance, some transferrable training, and participate in key initiatives of the Environmental Management System for the site. Location: Newark, Delaware (University of Delaware's Science, Technology, and Advance Research Campus - STAR Campus) Hours: Full-time or part-time schedule, flexible to candidate needs Term : 3 -month assignment between May - August 2024 The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following: - Work with staff to conduct environmental field sampling of wastewater, stormwater, and/or drinking water.
- Interpret data of field environmental sample results
- Help prepare correspondence for agencies such as Delaware Natural Resources of Environmental Control (DNREC), the City of Newark, the New Castle County Department of Public Works, and The Newark Partnership
- Shown (or trained) on the Chemours waste characterization/disposal process.
- Prepares shipments according to the Department of Transportation (DOT), and manifests hazardous waste following 40 hr. Hazwoper/RCRA and DOT Certification (third-party training upon hire).
- Review databases for site air contaminant emissions and/or waste disposal volumes
- Support maintenance of accurate records related to chemical inventories, requests, shipments of hazardous waste
- Assist with tasks for environmental compliance with Federal, State, and Local rules/regulations
- Recommend and coordinate development of a unique project to support Chemours' 2030 Corporate Responsibility Commitment Goals under climate, water, and/or waste at the site
- Complete required Environmental, Health and Safety training for the duties and hazards of the position
The following is required for this role : - Enrollment at an accredited college or university as a sophomore or above at time of assignment
- Pursuing an undergraduate degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Chemistry, Geology, Environmental Policy, Earth Science, Meteorology, and/or other similar applied science fields (PhD Post-Doc fulfillment will not be considered)
- Ability to read, write, and interpret scientific data
- Candidate capable of independently working on tasks alone or with limited supervision
- Some laboratory fieldwork/coursework in, but not limited to chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical techniques, stormwater, wastewater, and/or drinking water
