Position description The Urbano Laboratory of the University of California Davis invites applications for a full-time Junior Specialist, the successful applicant will be involved in research in the area of microbe-host interactions investigating fundamental biological processes that influence the outcome of human and animal infections under the direction of Dr. Roldolfo Urbano. I. RESEARCH (80% EFFORT) Research will include the genetic manipulation of cell lines and microbial organisms to evaluate the contribution of candidate genes to disease. Methodologies may include CRISPR-Cas9 knockout methods, allelic exchange mutagenesis, recombineering, and genomic or sub-genomic genetic screens. Additional methodologies will involve molecular cloning methods to generate fluorescent fusion proteins that will aid in the characterization of genes of interest. Imaging assays will incorporate super-resolution, confocal, and/or epifluorescence microscopy on live and fixed samples. Quantitative approaches will be applied to evaluate gene transcript and protein expression (e.g., QPCR, RNA-seq, gel electrophoresis and Western Blots). Other methodologies will include immunostaining methods to determine protein sub-cellular localization, pathogen proliferation assays, intracellular motility and cell-to-cell dissemination assays. Ultimately, will work to characterize immunity proteins with previously unknown roles in microbial pathogenesis and host defense. Summarize research findings in progress reports, manuscripts, and grants. Participating in writing and publication of manuscripts in collaboration with the PI and other lab members is also expected. II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (10% EFFORT) Participate in lab meetings, joint lab meetings, and journal clubs. Additional activities will include laboratory maintenance, assisting the PI with activities related to regulatory compliance (e.g., BUA), chemical inventory, maintaining laboratory protocols and training records, ordering supplies and interacting with vendors. When appropriate, present data and participate in grant and publication writing. III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (10%) Assist in the recruitment, laboratory training, and research of undergraduate students. Training will include basic laboratory technique and laboratory safety. Subject to funding availability, the candidate will present at regional meetings and/or national conferences. Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application) Previous laboratory experience Additional qualifications (required at time of start) Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Genetics/Genomics, or related field at time of appointment Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position) * Demonstrated knowledge of concepts related to microbe-host interactions, biomechanics, the cytoskeleton, and/or actin dynamics * Laboratory experience working with bacterial pathogens and/or immune cells * Experience with genetic manipulation of bacteria and/or cell lines * Experience in molecular biology, cloning, and biochemical methods * Experience with microscopy and image analysis * Experience quantifying biomechanical parameters (e.g., force, tension, velocity) * Data science, or biostatistics skills Application Requirements Document requirements - Curriculum Vitae - Your most recently updated C.V.
- Cover Letter (Optional)
- Statement of Research (Optional)
- Statement of Contributions to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion - Contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion documented in the application file will be used to evaluate applicants.
